Choosing the right school for your autistic child

A guide for parents/carers:

Choosing a school for your child is very important. The right school can help your child grow, learn, and feel happy. Every autistic child is different, so finding the best school for your child’s needs will help them to thrive.

Here are two important things to think about: the support the school gives and what the school is like.

School Support

  • Understand your child’s needs: What are your child’s strengths and challenges? Think about what they need help with. Can the school provide this? For example, do they offer one-on-one help, support with talking, or quiet spaces for sensory needs?
  • Look at different types of schools: There are different kinds of schools to consider. Specialist schools have programs for children with autism. Mainstream schools may have extra support or special classrooms. Private schools may offer services but can cost a lot. You can also think about homeschooling if a classroom doesn’t work for your child.
  • Check support services and therapies: Does the school offer speech therapy, occupational therapy, or help with social skills? Do they support wellbeing and behaviour?
  • Ask about success stories: How has the school helped other autistic children? Do they have good results? Can you talk to other parents about their experience?

School Environment

  • Check the curriculum and teaching: Does the school teach in a way your child will understand and enjoy?
  • Think about the environment and class size: Does the school have small classes, quiet and/or sensory rooms, or outdoor learning, like forest schools or animal therapy?
  • Visit the school: Go and see how the school works. Look at how staff treat the children. Are the children happy and busy? Does the school talk to parents often? How do they promote positive behaviour and keep children safe?
  • Practical things to think about: Is the school far away? Will your child find the journey hard? How will travel costs be funded?
