Location: Head Office and/or Home-Based, plus community clinics

Service: Advocacy Service

Hours: minimum 2 hours per week

Duration: 2 years (minimum of 6 months in position is preferred)

The Charity is developing a new Advocacy Service for Colchester and Tendring residents who wish to seek advice for themselves, or their family members, who may have autism or a mental health condition with autism. The areas that this service will cover are:-

  1. Education & Diagnosis;
  2. Welfare Benefits & Housing;
  3. Social Care & Health 

The Volunteer Advocate will support the Lead Advocate in the above areas to work with the autistic community to help them express their views, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain social care and health services they need. The Volunteer Advocate will work within the five Principles of Advocacy:-

  1. Clarity of purpose,
  2. Safeguard,
  3. Confidentiality,
  4. Equality and diversity
  5. Empowerment and putting people first

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a well-established regional charity.  Autism Anglia provides ongoing training and supervision, continuing professional development and support as well as an extensive induction on commencement of employment.

Your main duties will include:

  • Supporting individuals to get their voices heard and their views across on issues that affect their day-to-day lives
  • Empowering that person to achieve their desired outcome by giving direction, support and advice as necessary
  • Supporting the Lead Advocate
  • Giving advice and support in line with the 5 Principles of Advocacy
  • Helping to complete forms
  • Help individuals to understand reports and letters
  • Giving information as appropriate
  • Talking to and communicating with individuals
