What is Autism?

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person experiences the world around them, including how they communicate, process information and relate to others.

It’s known as a spectrum condition, which means that while autistic people may share certain traits, the way those traits appear can vary widely from person to person and even from day to day. No two autistic people are the same.

Autistic individuals often have a unique way of thinking, feeling and interacting. Their perspectives, values and experiences shape how they see and respond to the world, which can be different, but no less valid, than those of non-autistic people.

Understanding autism means recognising and respecting these differences, and learning how to support autistic people in ways that help them feel safe, heard and empowered.
