Autism Anglia is working with the NHS to provide an ‘autism friendly’ space for vaccinations in Colchester. The need was recognised by the Advocacy team at Autism Anglia as many of the service users were extremely nervous about their vaccinations and recognised that the environment and experience would need adjusting for neurodivergent adults and children.

Autism Anglia is a member of the Regional Stakeholder Network, Eastern Region. The issue of vaccinating autistic children and adults was highlighted at a recent ministerial covid briefing, by Annie Sands the Advocacy Manager.

The Regional Stakeholder Network brings the views of disabled people, local disability organisations, disabled people led organisations, and organisations that represent disabled people closer to government

This unique event is being held at Kingsland Church, Colchester on Saturday 15th January.

The event will be supported by the experienced team at Autism Anglia and will offer an autism friendly environment to help autistic individuals, their families and carers feel as comfortable as possible.  It is believed to be the first of it’s kind in the country.

They are working with the NHS to make adjustments to reduce stress and sensory input. Staff from the charity’s Advocacy Team will be available for support and reassurance throughout the day.

The service is available to ages twelve and above residing in North East Essex and will offer Pfizer, 1st, 2nd and 3rd or booster vaccines.  Spaces will need to be booked in advance, this is to ensure more time is given to individuals that need it and there will be less need to queue.

Other adjustments offered on the day for those with autism or co-morbid conditions will include:

  • Tailored communication methods
  • Visual aids/social story
  • Reduced environmental stimuli
  • NHS staff wearing plain clothes
  • Relaxed appointments

Kate Hancock, Chief Executive for the charity said: "We are delighted to be able to offer this unique service to meet the needs of autistic adults and children in Colchester.”

“I’m very grateful to the team at Kingsland Church who have offered the use of the venue free of charge to the charity to support this event.”
