What We Do - TEACCH

How do we use the TEACCH principles for planning and education?

Given that one of the primary aims of Adult Residential Services is to promote independence for the service users, the main purpose of TEACCH is to train and enable our service users to do things for themselves. Autistic service users don’t like surprises, so there are a number of TEACCH boards around each house showing timetables and the staff they will meet during the day.

Each TEACCH board is typically a white board of suitable size for the contents with Velcro sticky pads. Each picture is printed individually, laminated and also has Velcro on the back. Individual service users update their own boards, keeping them involved with planning their own diaries and up to date with what’s happening in their home.

While TEACCH is used in many other ways, these are the most common boards used in each house:
“Main day board”: Somewhere visible to all (maybe in the hallway) is a large board where anyone can quickly look to see what each person in the house is planning to do during the day.

  • At the top of the board is a list of each service user’s activities and location for the morning and afternoon

  • Underneath the activities are the staff who will be in the house or out with activities for the morning and afternoon

  • At the bottom of the board are staff who are staying overnight and those who are performing specific roles.

On many of the boards stick people with cut-out faces are used to portray the tasks and activities. Many autistic service users enjoy seeing their photograph around the house, but this also helps them recognise that the stick person is being used to represent themselves. However, it is important to use stick people to represent tasks and activities as the pictures can be of a personal nature. For privacy reasons, the photographs on the faces have been removed on these examples.

Each service user has their own “day board” in their bedroom, following a similar pattern to the main board but with greater detail.

  • At the top of the board is a full list of the activities for the day. These include many of the things that we all take for granted as tasks for the day. In this example, the service user is reminded to go to the toilet and complete other personal hygiene tasks before having breakfast. Then, after going to the toilet again, this service user will be taking a minibus to jigsaw to study life skills then go to the toilet again before the minibus takes them back home for some lunch.

  • Underneath the activities is a list of staff in the house in the morning, afternoon and evening sessions.

Individual service users have boards for specific tasks as appropriate. For example, if someone is learning to clean their teeth then they will have a board near their sink explaining the steps to follow.
