What We Do for Families |
|
|
We
are here to support families and individuals when they have received a
diagnosis of autism or Asperger's Syndrome, or if they are
concerned about the possibility of Autism Spectrum
Condition.
- We can advise families on how to get a diagnosis
e.g. the information to take to the G.P. when requesting
a referral.
- We can give names of Professionals who can give a
private diagnosis (very expensive), and advice on how to
get back into the medical system after private
diagnosis.
- We are available to help set up a Parent Support
group if a need is identified in an area.
- We can help families to devise strategies to manage
behaviour and increase independence.
- We can help to fill in Disability Living Allowance
forms, Education Maintenance Allowance forms and other
benefit forms.
- We can advise on how to request for an Assessment of
Special Educational Needs, and what to include in an
application to the Local Authority.
- We liaise with other organisations to gain more
information on services in the community that families
can access, and link up with these organisations.
- We give contact details of groups and organisations
which may be able to help families more directly.
- We send information to, and conduct training on
request with, schools and services that may need help in
understanding the characteristics of Autism Spectrum
Conditions, (eg: police force, mainstream schools etc).
- We attend meetings with families as a friendly face
for the family, eg: tribunal meetings, meetings with the
Local Authority etc.
- We can refer to appropriate organisations regarding
Special Educational Needs Tribunals.
- We listen to parents when they need to talk, shout,
cry, and scream about themselves, their children, and
how they are feeling.
In May 2011 Mencap are holding free information sessions
in the south east for anyone who cares for someone who has a
learning disability. More information can be found by
