Norfolk Houses
Autism Anglia has three houses situated in Norfolk: two
in Dereham and one in Bowthorpe, an estate on the outskirts
of Norwich. All three houses together with the branch office
in Dereham were previously known as the Norfolk Autistic
Community Housing Association (NACHA), one of the
organisations merging to become Autism Anglia.
Whitstone House
Whitstone is a spacious Victorian house set in an acre of
grounds providing a comfortable and homely environment. It
is currently home to 11 service users, all in single rooms
with the exception of the largest bedroom being shared by 2
young women.
Located on the edge of Dereham town, Whitstone House is within easy
walking distance of the town centre.
There is a covered swimming pool in the garden with Roman
steps to enable easy access into the pool.
An attractive summerhouse in the garden provides an additional facility for creative
activities. The walls are adorned with beautiful paintings
and textiles, all created by the service users.
Four allotments rented by Autism Anglia and maintained by
service users are within easy reach of the house. One
service user has entered a garden in the Norfolk Show for
the last two years, winning his category and getting 2nd
prize for best in show both years.
Walnut House
Being home to four of our most able service users, Walnut
House was opened in the grounds of Whitstone in 1998.
Greater emphasis is placed on encouraging service users of
Walnut House to take responsibility for all the day-to-day
chores of everyday living. A recent extension has made the
property more spacious.
Lambert House
Opened in 1994, Lambert House is a purpose-built home for 10
adults. All rooms are singles with hand basins and are
decorated to reflect the individual tastes and interests of
each service user.
Situated on the outskirts of Norwich in the suburb of
Bowthorpe, it has good bus links to the city and easy access
to a nearby community centre which provides some local
activities, including a luncheon club and computing
sessions. The staff at Lambert House have been particularly
successful in involving service users in local activities
and there is a growing relationship with people living
nearby.
Lambert House has an integral therapy pool, an art and
crafts room. A new sensory garden is currently being
developed and an allotment has recently been secured to
enhance horticultural skills.
